The American Design Suit Or The European Design

By Victor Epand

The big difference between the American design and the European design cut suits is that they are of two distinct styles, each of which has its own fans. So, all you have to do is to decide which is the right design for you.

In general, you will find that American design suits are cut with a much less pronounced shoulder for a softer silhouette. Along with this, the softer shoulder is usually followed with a higher set arm hole and a center vent. There is no real functional advantage to a center vent versus a double vent. In fact, it is just one of those things that has evolved over time and has become a quintessential part of the American design in suits.

American design suits also tend to have much more generously cut trousers, with a fuller waist and seat, compared to their European counter part - the European design cut suit pant. To accommodate this slightly looser cut of pants, the sides of the suit jacket are usually given a slightly more generous cut. The end result is a suit, that, while it looks trim and fitted, also feels fairly relaxed to the wearer.

The hallmark of most European design cut suits is a sharp and engineered shoulder line that tends to taper to a trim waist and forms a distinct V silhouette. Due to their fuller shoulders, European design suits are often included with deeper cut arm holes, which, many men feel, allow for greater comfort and ease of motion.

The slacks of a European design cut suit will tend to be closer to the body through the waist and seat, although European design cut trousers are often surprisingly full across the thigh. To accentuate the over all slim silhouette through the mid section, the jackets tend to have no vent or they are double vented. Again, there is no real practical reason here, because it is just a tradition that has continued over the years.

In recent years, American design and European design cuts have started to merge. You will often see an American design cut suit with a slimmer jacket, or a European design cut suit with a less radical V shape. There are many differences you will find between these amazing suits such as flat front versus pleated pants, or single breasted versus double breasted styles, which are not a point of geographical origin, but simply more of a stylistic choice made by the suit's designer.

There is simply no substitute for trying them on, because the only way to know which style of suit will work best for you is to try them both on. It is not only a matter of what looks best, but also what feels best for you. Do not just stand in front of the mirror while you are deciding on a suit. Instead, move around, walk about the store and swing your arms.
