7 Signs That You Might Need A New Mattress

By Ray Baker

The first step you need to take before starting out on a hunt for a new cheap mattress is to determine whether or not your old mattress really needs replacing. You can spend a lot of money on new mattresses, so it's important you understand the signs you should be looking for.

Sometimes it is obvious that our mattresses need replacing, particularly if it sags quite badly in the middle or it is showing signs of obvious wear and tear on the fabric. But sometimes it is not so obvious and we carry on for long periods of time suffering everything our current mattress inflicts on us. If you are not sure, these few questions should help:

1. How old is your mattress?

If your mattress is more than 7 years old there's a fair chance that it approaching the end of its useful life. Some more expensive mattress will last a good deal longer than 7 years, but if you are reading this, I would say that there's a good chance your mattress is a few years old.

2. Do you wake up when someone else moves?

If you are woken in the middle of the night when your partner turns over or changes position in bed, it's a sure sign that your mattress is due for retirement. Your partner should be able to move without it having a detrimental effect on your sleep.

3. Can you feel lumps and bumps?

If you can feel lumps and bumps in your mattress when you apply a little pressure with your hands, your mattress will almost certainly be having a negative effect on your back's well-being.

4. Slept well somewhere else recently?

Hotel beds are wonderful aren't they? That's because hotels know the value in investing in good quality mattresses. If you've stayed at one recently and found that you'd had your best night's sleep for ages, it is probably because your own mattress is past its use by date.

5. Are you stiff in the morning?

Huh hmm...I'm talking about your aches and pains - there's an old adage that 'worn out beds make worn out bodies'. How can you hope to be at your best if you are not refreshed in the morning?

6. Did you sleep better a few years ago?

Sometimes we put this down to getting older, when in fact it's often due to the fact that our mattress has worn out. You can reverse this trend easily with a comfortable new mattress.

7. Do you hear creaking and groaning sounds?

At the moment it is probably just your mattress making these noises, but if it needs replacing and you carry on putting up with it, it's only a matter of time before your body starts to rebel.

If 2 or more of these apply to you, it's a sure thing you need to get your check book out and invest in a good quality cheap mattress.
