Innovative Marketing Techniques : Then and Now

By John Meatte
Jan 12, 2009
Marketing, even in ancient times, has been crucial. The person capable of negotiating the best deal won the right to trade and several things came into play. Perhaps most important, the merchandise had to be something desirable and useful. Secondly, the price had to be right: 7 pelts for a bushel of nuts & berries, and so on.

The quality of the merchandise had to be better than the competition, as well. One thing that is generally overlooked in marketing is the presentation of the goods. In the past, salespersons, traders and marketers had direct contact with consumers. Today's marketplace is an entirely different story.

Trading evolved from the exchange of goods to the exchange of money and thus the need for mutually agreed upon needs diminished. Third party marketers came into being. Traveling salespersons could make deals with manufacturers and go from town to town selling the wares as intermediaries. Still, the need for actual direct contact with clients was a necessity.

As salespersons realized that non-stop traveling meant added expense, time away from home and venturing into unfamiliar territories they realized that dealing with a single local person in each territory was far more efficient. Thus network marketing became very popular leading to the concept of permanent storefronts at the territory and local levels.

The network marketing concept is still very much alive. The local grocery store has vendors who work locally for manufacturers and producers supply the shelves. The consumer is able to buy goods in their own neighborhoods which may have come from anywhere around the world. Network marketing is especially suited for down line resellers such as Shaklee, Avon, and many of the herbal supplement companies whereas individual service and custom product companies rely much more on other means of advertising.

The advent of the Internet as a source of information changed marketing strategies forever. Today, nearly every business has a web page. The original idea of sharing information quickly evolved into an enormous marketing opportunity. The additional capabilities of companies to gather leads, create sales, and accept payment over the internet makes on-line business presence a must to succeed.

How does internet marketing differ from network marketing? Presentation is everything. The ability to talk face to face with potential customers is eliminated. The website must "speak" to the customer. The products must be graphically presented in an eye catching way.

Service companies must clearly spell out advantages in order to keep the readers interest. Web site design and knowledge of on line marketing techniques is essential to creating a successful presence on the internet.

Equivalent to like the old adage "getting one's foot in the door" used by door-to-door network salespersons, a successful web site much grab the attention of the buyer within the first few seconds. A drab web site with hard to read text or graphics which seemingly take forever to load will lose potential customer interest every time.

There are numerous useful tools to help get your internet marketing site up and running as well as many free online training workshops to introduce you to the best techniques. Vital information may be gleaned from free help sites and position you on the road to success.
