Making The Most Of Apartment Living

By Art Gib

With the collapse of the real estate market, apartment living has become in vogue again. Of course, in big cities like New York, it has never gone out of style. If you call an apartment home, there are limitations on what your landlord will allow you to do to it. But with some ingenuity, you can make the most of the space you have and make your place comfortable and functional.

-- The first and most obvious rule is to keep it clean and uncluttered. Get rid of stuff you don't use and streamline your belongings. Sometimes this is a difficult step to take, but with limited storage space, it's also essential.

-- Be space-aware when purchasing or acquiring furniture for your place. A sleeper sofa or futon is a great choice for small apartment living because it serves a double function: sleeping and sitting. If you have a large bedroom, purchase a bed that is high enough to allow storage underneath. There are plastic storage bins which can be stacked under a bed for easy access to any number of items. A drop-leaf style table can be adjusted to suit a number of guests yet can be moved against a wall when not in use.

-- Once you have your furniture, be careful about how you arrange it in your living space. Pushing all the furniture against the wall does not necessarily increase useable space or even make your apartment look bigger. Keep your lifestyle in mind: do you often have guests? Can they move around a room easily and sit and visit without having to talk across the room? Movement should be easy and never rigid. It still has to look homey.

-- Nothing makes a smaller space look larger than light! Don't drag down the feel of your apartment with heavy drapes. Let as much natural light into your place as possible. If you have small or a limited amount of windows, invest in plenty of soft accent lighting, keep wall paint light, or keep your decorating color scheme on the neutral side.

-- Temporary pressurized walls are an absolutely fantastic solution for people who want to create a new room or closet while staying within the architectural confines of their lease! These professionally installed walls can transform a single room into two without doing permanent damage to the apartment's structure. A large living room can be transformed into a sitting room and an office. Pressurized walls can add a closet to a master bedroom easily and efficiently.

Apartment living in the city is a lifestyle with its own unique challenges and limitations, but with ingenuity and imagination, anyone can change a small amount of space into an attractive and highly functional home.
