Enjoy Presidential History from a Virginia B&B

As we get set to inaugurate a new leader, it's also a good time to remember the leaders of the past. Take a Virginia vacation and you will find four historic presidential homes to tour, and after a day delving into the nation's history you can come back and spend a restful night at a peaceful bed and breakfast.

More presidents have hailed from Virginia than any other state, and most of them are conveniently located near each other. In fact President Jefferson's magnificent Monticello is just a few minutes from President James Monroe's gracious home Ash Lawn-Highland. Both homes are open to the public for tours. During the warmer seasons, the garden and plantation tours at Monticello are not to be missed.

James Madison's Montpelier is a mere half-hour from Jefferson and Monroe's homes, and Woodrow Wilson's home also is within an hour's drive of the others. George Washington's estate, Mount Vernon, about two hours from Jefferson's home, rests in the Alexandria countryside.

The Holladay House in Orange, Virginia, is the perfect location from which to enjoy all the presidential action. This charming country town is just minutes from James Madison's Montpelier. The homes of Presidents Jefferson and Monroe are less than 30 miles away. Even Mount Vernon, George Washington's majestic estate is less than two hours drive. In addition, this historic Virginia inn is located near many popular wineries and excellent restaurants.

The guest rooms at the Holladay House are decorated with antiques, and the queen and king beds are topped with the finest linens. Some rooms include a fireplace or double whirlpool tub, and all bathrooms are stocked with specialty hypoallergenic bath products. The innkeepers pamper guests with a full breakfast and offer coffee, tea and home baked goodies throughout the day.

To celebrate the inauguration of Barack Obama to our nation's most prestigious office, the innkeepers at Holladay House are offering a special inauguration discount. If you stay at the inn for three nights during the inauguration (January 20), you will receive your third night's stay at half price. At a time when saving money is especially important, this deal will help make your presidential getaway a little easier on the pocketbook.

For a truly patriotic vacation, consider one of the inn's special presidential packages. The "Bill of Rights" package includes a two-night stay at the inn, full breakfast each morning, and two tickets or passes to Montpelier, Monticello and Ash-Lawn Highland, as well as maps and driving directions. In addition, the innkeepers will send you off with a stocked picnic basket filled with cheese, crackers, fruit, sparkling water and dessert. Freshly baked cookies and beverages will be waiting for you at the inn after you return from your adventure. The "Constitution Package," includes the aforementioned goodies, but upgrades your room choice to one of the inn's luxury suites, which include a double whirlpool tub, king-size bed and private porch.
