Jan 16, 2009
It is always recommended that a proper understanding of the basics is gained prior to leaping into pursuing this sport, as one can be exposed to potentially dangerous situations which will require the necessary skill and judgment to deal with the situation effectively.

The first step in kayaking is to actually learn the basics and get comfortable with techniques and procedures that are involved when one decides to learn kayaking. These skills include the basic checking of equipment for defects and potential breakages so that you may repair or replace any of the affected equipment. This will also involve getting to know the equipment, and making informed decisions when purchasing the necessary tools whilst you learn kayaking.

Essentially when you consider kayaking equipment, these items go beyond the kayak and the paddle, as you will most likely discover when you learn kayaking. There are also a vast variety of kayaks, which are made according to the desired use of the kayak, as well as the required amount of people that will be using the kayak. Kayaks can come in varieties that are suitable for sea use, white water use, calm or open water use and so on.

General gear, which will likely be required whilst you learn kayaking that can be considered as essential, include the kayak, the paddle or oar and a life jacket. As stated previously the type will be determined by the intended use. As the different conditions will require different equipment and strength of equipment, when you learn kayaking you will most likely be starting with the touring and recreational aspect thereof. In this instance additional accessories will include a compass, paddle leash and of course a safety kit. The safety kit acts as a first aid kit, as well as a mini survival kit, should you get stuck out in the wilderness for a couple of days. Additional accessories might include bilge pumps and so forth, it really depends how in depth you intend going in terms of your kayaking sport.

As you learn kayaking it is best to start out slowly at first in open water conditions, this will enable you to get used to the feel of the kayak and be able to handle the kayak suitably in these conditions; this might include getting to grips with issues such as turning the kayak up after it has capsized, this can prove to be vital, once again dependent upon the conditions in which you have chosen to kayak.

It would be wise to check with your kayaking instructor in terms of obtaining the vital and essential equipment, once you have established that then a number of luxury or other personal items can be purchased in accordance with your kayaking desires.
