All About Direct Mail Lists
Direct mail lists are available for a variety of reasons, the most common lists being businesses and consumers although there are numerous segments available within those two categories as well. Direct mail lists are lists of businesses and consumers contact information so that businesses may send their marketing messages directly to those on the lists.
This helps to target the right type of consumer or business so the marketing message is sent to the right type of customer. This enables the cost of the marketing campaign to be minimized and the results to be optimized, thus providing for better profits of the business.
Direct mail lists can still be pretty generic when it comes to a mass mailing, or they can be narrowed down to be very specific, i.e. those consumers who are within the ages of 25-30, married, buying a home, and expecting a baby within the next three months. This type of campaign would be expected to have greater results, depending on the message of course, than a mass mailing sent to "household" of practically every house within a city and advertising for baby diapers.
With an understanding of the goals, customers intended to reach, and any other pertinent available information, the direct mail list can be very targeted and reduce the cost of the mailing significantly. Without all the criteria known a mass mailing would ensue and the costs could be ten times of that when the criteria have been narrowed down to a more specific group of customers.
Although most people think of direct mail lists as being directed toward consumers, some direct mail lists are for businesses as well. Business to business mail lists are not uncommon and can generate great results, but again it depends on both the message and the cleanliness of the list.
Business messages are typically sent to the office, but with one specific person or function in mind, not just to the name of the business. The messages are sent in hopes of convincing a person who operates as a certain function within the business to change who they use for a certain service or their supplier. For example, Joe paper supplier would send a direct mailer to Jim financial services, attention purchasing director in hopes that the purchasing director would grant Joe a meeting to learn more about the services available to him.
If the message is convincing and worded well, Jim will give Joe a call and possibly do business with him. All because of using a good direct mail list.
