Upgrading To A Tankless Water Heater

By Chad Wiley
Jan 18, 2009
In most homes the energy costs for heating water are around 15 to 20% of the total utility costs. A conventional water heater utilizes a storage tank that supplies the hot water but can waste energy by not using all the water that is heated. One of the best ways to conserve energy and cut down on the cost of eating your water is by putting a tank less water heater.

A conventional water heater constantly draws energy to keep the water hot in the tank. The longer the water sits without being used heat escapes through the walls of the tank by way of radiation and conduction. This causes a 10 to 20 per cent loss in water heating costs. A tank less water heater eliminates a storage tank and does not suffer from heat loss. These water heaters are energy and provide hot water only when needed.

How do these tank less water heaters work? The water flows through the system which activates a heating device powered by gas, propane or electric. The water is heated to a certain temperature and once the water is turned off the system stops.

If you're building a new home these water heaters will incur a larger upfront cost, but you can recapture the utility costs savings. A tank less water heater will cost you more than a conventional water heater but the energy savings will offset the price by cutting your water heating bill.

In addition to cutting costs tank less water heaters will last 20 years or more, nearly twice as long as conventional water heaters. The tank less system also requires less maintenance and cost much less to operate. Some people point to the fact that tank less water heaters while supplying end less hot water thus use more energy and water. The real story is that homes save more in heating costs by using less water. This can be achieved by using energy efficient appliances and fixtures that conserve water and can optimize a tank less water heater. The failure to implement a total energy philosophy is usually the cause of the criticism.

One strategy that is particularly affective is tying in a solar thermal system with a tank less water heater. Solar thermal is far less expensive and perfect for regular hot water. The job of the water heater is made easier by the sun because the sun takes the edge off of the water. If the water temperature is higher the water heater uses less energy to reach the proper temperature.

There are some factors to consider when buying a tank less water heater. Doing some research on your home's water demands to determine whether you need an electric or gas unit. There is quite a variation in price and the general rule is the higher the capacity the more expensive it will be. Make sure to keep in mind that higher costs up front will be off set by lower energy costs and a longer life span. Tank less water heaters are more expensive to begin with that you will be able to recoup your money back in energy savings.
