Finding and choosing a new cheap mattress can be a frustrating and often confusing experience. To help you, we have pulled together our top 10 tips to try and make the whole process as trouble-free as possible. Here we go:

1. Spend lots of time choosing your new cheap mattress - you will be spending every night for many years to come on it, so taking 10 or 15 minutes to try out each mattress you are considering is time well spent. Roll around on it for a while and try lying in different positions.

2. A box spring is best for ultimate comfort, but we all sweat a lot in our sleep, and the sweat has nowhere to go but into our bedding and mattress. For that reason it is important that your mattress gets plenty of ventilation - a slatted base will help here.

3. If you are much lighter in weight than your partner, your best option is to go for a pocket spring mattress. Pocket springs work independently of each other, so when your partner moves, you will sleep soundly on.

4. If you have a very hard mattress at the moment and it has become uncomfortable, don't be tempted to go for a really soft one this time, it will be a tough step to make.

5. If you move a lot in the night, you need a mattress with enough firmness to support your joints when you are turning.

6. Your new cheap mattress must be firm enough to support the natural curvature of the spine, but not so firm that your back is straight when you lie flat - your spine should retain its natural curve.

7. If you are an asthma suffer, you might want to consider a hypo-allergenic mattress. If that's out of your price range, you can get hypo-allergenic mattress covers and bedding that will do an adequate job.

8. If you are set on a box spring foundation it will add to the cost. A basic foundation will be cheaper, but will lack the added 'suspension' that you get with a traditional box spring - for maximum longevity, go for steel framed.

9. If you are constantly woken up by your partner's movements, you have two choices - buy separate beds, or more realistically buy the largest bed you can comfortably fit in your bedroom.

10. When you have decided which cheap mattress you want, negotiate hard with the salesman. Never pay the first price you are quoted; the salesman will always expect to reduce the first price. Always be prepared to walk away to get the best deal available.

This guide is meant to offer you some general advice about finding and buying yourself a new mattress. There are many other factors that may be important to you, but always make your purchase based on comfort first, we all want to buy a cheap mattress, but the deal should not be done solely on the grounds of cost.
