Got Workplace Anxiety? Get the Five Step Plan To Take Control!
It is undeniable that work is among the primary sources of stress. Office politics, code of duties, workplace chaos - these are just some of the stressful situations that arise for all of us at work. Furthermore, the fear of getting fired also amplifies the tension. If your anxiety levels become too high, anxiety can interfere with your ability to complete your work effectively, increasing your overall tension and leading to anxiety attacks.
What creates anxiety in the workplace? Anxiety can arise for a number of reasons but most often it occurs when the person feels victimized and in a situation that they have no control over and which they disagree with. Offices and office politics are fertile grounds for such situations and sadly, the competition for jobs and promotions up the corporate ladder increases the level of stress for everyone. For someone who suffers from anxiety attacks, this can be a nightmare.
One: Change Your Mindset To take control of your workplace anxiety, begin by changing your mindset. Remember first that you are not alone. Just the mere recognition that there are people just like you who are suffering with office work problems too will give you a boost of confidence. Second, learn the triggers within your workplace. Certainly there are situations and people that can ignite stress for everyone. Pinpoint these triggers and map out a logical, mental plan for standing up to these situations.
Two: Go to the Top An important aspect in dealing with workplace anxiety is to speak to your boss and explain to him the troubles you are dealing with. If your boss values your work and your honesty he or she will try to prevent the issues that set the stage for your anxiety.
Three: Take a Break take frequent office breaks as much as you can. If it is lunchtime, do not stay in your office. Find yourself a place to eat, preferably outside in the fresh air and sunshine or a nice cafe or diner where you can look outside a window. This can go a long way toward helping you relax and release stress. This is an essential need from everyone, even those who do not suffer from anxiety. So for you with anxiety at work, it is highly important.
Four: Be Proactive The third thing you can do is to be proactive in approaching work with a sense of balance and wellness. Sometimes simple things like going into your office early to beat the rush hour traffic and begin your work day relaxed and with that much less stress in your system can change your outlook for the whole day and help you deal with other situations that much better.
Five: Drink! Drink - but not what you think! When you feel your anxiety levels are rising, drink plenty of water. You may think "what can water do to relieve the anxiety that I am feeling?" An unknown fact about anxiety is that dehydration can aggravate it, which is why water is so crucial. So stay hydrated and when you feel anxious, reach for a glass of water.
