In the service world there is the old saying that you get what you pay for and that is true for any service that you may require. For some services you will want to be more selective on whom you hire and keep in mind that the more experienced providers will usually be the most expensive as well.
When you are looking to hire a locksmith you want to be certain that you are hiring someone with the necessary experience and that may mean that you wind up paying a little more money but when the end result is important then spending the extra money should not be a problem.
There are thousands of different kinds of locks and depending on your situation you may also have the added element of a lock that is many decades old. If you get yourself locked out of an older apartment building then there is a chance that the lock could be very old and unfamiliar to a locksmith without the proper experience. On the other end of the spectrum there are new kinds of locks being developed every day and an experienced locksmith knows that they need to keep up on the new technology if they want to retain customers. It will cost you a little more money to get someone with the proper experience but when the job is done right the first time, and you are happy with the results, then spending that extra money on a locksmith with experience is well worth the expense.
