Weddings in Prague, Czech Republic

By Rudy Van Lancker

Like much of Europe, Prague is rich in history, steeped in wedding traditions and is beautiful to see. Czech Republic boasts the most castles per square mile and Prague is home to the largest ancient castle in the world, Prague Castle. Throughout history and even in modern times, the city has been the inspiration for many famous artists. Known as "the pearl of Europe", Prague is the most popular tourist destination of any city in Europe.

Over six hundred years of amazing architecture, Prague offers a multitude of wonderful venues to hold a destination wedding. Both civil and church weddings are legally binding ceremonies and foreigners are permitted to marry in Prague. In addition to the regular identification such as passport, couple's birth certificates, and divorce and death certificates if applicable, Prague also requires the baptismal certificates of both persons, a Certificate from a Marriage Preparation Course and a Letter of Delegation from the couple's priest.

In order to avoid the confusion of the paperwork, wedding planners in Prague now offer the couple a Symbolic Ceremony, one which is not considered a legal marriage in Prague, but allows the couple to marry as though it were a wedding. The couple, would of course, have been legally married at home before traveling to Prague. Unless they tell their guests, the marriage at home will not be common information since the wedding in Prague will seem like the real thing.

Although heavily influenced by the Catholic faith, Protestant weddings may occur and the ceremonies may be conducted in English as well. Civil ceremonies may be held at town halls, historic castles and in any of the many gardens around Prague. Religious ceremonies normally take place in the churches but may be conducted in some of the castles and park gardens.

Many cities and countries allow various indoor and outdoor venues to hold weddings, but one idea that is very unique in Prague is the Rooftop Restaurant Wedding. Known for its fine dining and luxurious, romantic atmosphere, the restaurant is set in the Aria Hotel overlooking Lesser Town, Petrin Hill, Prague Castle and St. Nicholas Church. What a spectacular way to see the city while enjoying your special moments.

Historic Steamboat Cruises are another fabulously unique idea in Prague to host a wedding reception or cocktail hour before the reception. The cruise is very flexible and the couple determines what level of service they require. They may even book the cruise as entertainment for their guests as it offers a wonderful ride down the Vltava River displaying the many old bridges.

Oddly enough, one of the most luxurious places to hold a wedding reception is the Grand Ballroom in the hotel near Old Town Square. What makes this venue so odd, the ballroom is in the basement of the hotel. Yet every detail in workmanship is superb with the four thousand piece Czech crystal glass chandelier and the baroque beauty restored to perfection. The location is better suited to larger weddings as it seats one hundred and forty guests.

Lastly, many of the finest restaurants in Prague are situated near a historical monument, bridge, building or something of significance. Because of the fine dining and historical importance, the restaurants are proud to offer wedding reception services.
