Coming Up With New Ideas For A Newsletter

By Lilach Bullock

Coming up with ideas for your newsletter can be quite challenging, especially when it has been in production for a long time. Whether you have a lot of readers or only a dozen, you probably want your newsletter to be read by as many of these subscribers as possible, and so want to make your newsletter as interesting and as accessible as possible. In this article, we will take a look at some of the ways you can keep your newsletter fresh and interesting for those readers, as well as some tips for hooking new readers.

It does not matter what your newsletter is about, or what its purpose is. If you have run out of ideas, you are not going to be able to make any more newsletters, since no reader is going to want to read the same newsletter twice. The trick for coming up with new material is to think of your newsletter as a series of sets of information about the same topic. All newsletters, no matter how general they are, can have their topic summed up in a single word.

Say, for example, that your newsletter is about cars. A good way to break down this topic is into several smaller ones, such as, say, car models, car manufacturers, and car mechanics. You can then further break down these topics, and then again, however much is necessary, until you have got more than enough topics to last you. If you do not have enough topics, get more specific. If you can not get any more specific than you currently are, go broader again and try something a little different. Finding new ideas for a newsletter is simply a matter of finding topics that are related to your current one through one of these branches.

Keep in mind that the more specific you get with your ideas, the fewer people they are likely to interest. There are a lot more people that are going to want to read about car parts than car brake fluid, for example. Be as specific as you can be without being exclusive or esoteric, and make your content as accessible and as entertaining as you can while still having legitimate information. All in all, it is up to you to create a solid reader base, and this can be done simply by providing a lot of readable, interesting, and specific enough content that just keeps coming and coming.
