This article is for the tourist who intends to visit Greece for the first time. It provides useful information that one should bear in mind before making the trip.

The tourist season for Greece is in the summer months, that is, June to September. Obtaining air tickets during that period can be quite costly, particularly on week-ends. Savings can be made on the air fare by looking for the best deals available and comparing the prices of the different airlines. Charters can be taken as they tend to be cheaper than normal flights.

Flights from all over the globe land in 15 different airports in Greece. However, if you intend to visit the small Greek islands, you will need to transfer from the international airport to domestic ones on the islands. This is easier if you land in Athens.

The Greek currency, the "drachma", has now given place to the Euro, as Greece is now a member of the European Union. US tourists should therefore change their currency at landing, especially since many places in Greece do not have ATMs or banks.

Vacationing in a foreign country always entails some risks such as robbery. It is therefore preferable to carry traveler's cheques rather than cash. Traveler's cheques cannot be used by somebody else other than the owner. Ticket agencies will help you change the cheques to cash, if you really need it.
Greece has over 2000 islands which are all tourist attractions. It is therefore impossible to visit all Greece by using the bus or car. At some point or other, you are bound to take to the sea. This will be made easy if you enroll with a group or hire a shipping company.

Accommodation in Greece ranges from the luxurious hotels and country houses to the caravan, campsite or the small room rented in a village. Visiting Greece is therefore affordable to anybody, regardless of his/her income. Another option is to rent a boat. Some companies allow you to stay in rented yachts for many days.
Most Greek citizens are conversant in English, so that no trouble is expected when interacting with them. You may also want to learn some of the local language to further facilitate communication. Simple online searches will enable you to learn essentials such as "thank you" and "how much".

Greece has a very good transport system. The visitor can hire a car at landing or use the numerous taxis. You can also get into group tours that visit the country by bus. Rented bikes are also available for those who wish to have a more personalized visit.
Greece can be visited at any time of the year. Both the peak and off-peak period offer good sightseeing opportunities. It all depends on the visitor's tastes and agenda. You can make the visit alone or accompanied with family or friends. There is ample variety of activity to suit all tastes.

Armed with this essential information, you will be able to plan your trip better and choose your route well.
