Ice Fishing Tackle for Beginning Ice Fishermen

Name just about any activity that the entire family can do in the Winter and you can count on it costing hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars to outfit yourself and family. But there is one sport the family can do that you can get started in for less than a hundred dollars or so. This sport is Ice Fishing. It's wholesome fun that you and your family will enjoy, plus you just might fill the freezer with tasty fish!

If you've ever wondered into a Sporting Goods store and looked at all the ice fishing equipment, you could get overwhelmed pretty quickly. You might be wondering "What are the basics I need to get started ice fishing?" Well, the basics are pretty simple and inexpensive. You don't need all the high dollar fancy gear on the shelves to be a successful ice fisherman.

This is why I wrote this list of essential ice fishing equipment that a Newbie will need to get started. The big surprise is that for what it cost to fill a F-250 up with diesel, you could nab all the fishing supplies that the Fisherman will need to start fishing.

Before anything else, you'll want to find an auger meant for ice fishing to make holes in the ice. If it was me, I'd get a five or six inch auger meant for ice fishing for panfish. If you want to go after bigger fish like Bass, Pike and Walleye, then I recommend a eight or ten inch ice auger. When it comes to augers, you have two choices, power augers or the manual augers. Obviously the manual augers are not as expensive as the power augers but require more work to use. You'll also need a scoop to get the ice chips from the hole in the ice.

You'll need a way to get the fish to the surface. For this, you'll want to use tip ups or a rod and reel. Multiple tip ups allow you to fish many holes while a rod and reel will restrict you to only one hole at a time. Some ice fishermen increase the odds of them bringing home fish by using a combination of tip ups and rod and reels.

The line you use for fishing should be designed for ice fishing. The frigid waters can make the line break easily. For this reason you will want to be sure and obtain fishing line made for fishing through the ice. Cortland makes a product called Ice Line that is great. The line is the most important part of your ice fishing equipment.

For bait, you can buy mealworms, spikes or nightcrawlers for panfish. For bigger fish, you may want to use minnows or artificial lures like tear drop jigs or jigging spoons. It's best to take a variety since you never know what the fish will want once you get out on the ice.

Unless you don't mind standing all day, you had better think about bringing something to sit on. Many ice fishermen simply use a 5 gallon bucket. This works great and you can put gear in it to haul it back to your vehicle. Some will bring lawn chairs but they're less practical. Some die hard ice fishermen will shell out considerably money and buy a ice hut and small heater. While expensive, these are very nice and make the coldest day on the lake enjoyable.

And this is all you need to begin catching fish through the ice. Also you'll need a fishing license and read up on the regulations for your area. Being ticketed for breaking a law can ruin your fishing trip. Now go out and bring home some tasty fish. Never forget the first rule of ice fishing, be safe and follow all the safety rules for ice fishing.
