Anabolic steroids are most widely known to be used by professional athletes. Most recently the National Baseball Association has been hit with accusations that many of their top players have used anabolic steroids. For years, the weightlifters have been blamed for taking steroids to gain an advantage over the competition.

Anabolic steroids are used to build muscles, body mass, and other tissues. They are a class of steroid hormones closely related to the hormone, testosterone. Anabolic steroids increase protein synthesis in cells and cellular tissue in the muscles. As tempting as steroids are, it's best to understand the full effects (positive and negative) of them before you consider using them for yourself.

Positive Side Effects
Anabolic steroids can have positive effects on the body as well, which is why they are so favored. The person taking the steroid most likely will experience drastic changes in their performance and appearance. Medical purposes are used to help people increase bone marrow stimulation, growth stimulation, and induction of puberty in males or hormone replacement therapy.

Body builders use steroids for more competitive reasons. Anabolic steroids increase leanness and muscle definition and mass. Users experience muscle strength and endurance, which makes their workout sessions powerful. Their recovery rate is minimized as well. Added benefits include an increase in sex drive.

Negative Side Effects
It's important to know the each individual is different. What one person might experience when using steroids might be completely different from someone else who uses the same steroids at the same duration and dosage. Different factors play a part in how steroids affect you. A woman's body may show signs of steroid use much faster than a man. On the contrary, a man who's in his 60's may experience negative results sooner than a woman in her 30's.

Reports indicate that the most detrimental affect of steroid use is fatality. Those who use steroids for any period of time should monitor their liver, kidney, and heart for damage. Other potential internal affects include high blood pressure and cholesterol levels.

Steroid use can also be seen when looking at one's appearance. Sudden acne breakouts, oily skin and hair are noticeable side effects of steroid use. Swelling of the body may also appear. In women, deepening of the voice, facial hair and balding can occur.

Both males and females of steroid use increase their changes of risk for serious hormonal and reproduction problems such as decreased menstruation in women and low sperm count or infertility in men.

It's true that anabolic steroids can make a person feel like they have super abilities. However, taking anabolic steroids can be dangerous. Understanding the pros and cons of the effects steroids can have on the body, will enable to make the best choice as to whether or not you should take them.
