Did You Know You Can Pierce Your Tongue In More Ways Than One?
Only a few years ago, getting a tongue piercing meant getting a barbell pierced through the middle of your tongue. Today, things are not so simple. There are many different types of tongue piercings you can do today, and the purpose of this article is to help you understand what is available, and what the difference is. Whether you're a teenager hoping to get a cool piercing, or a parent trying to understand the lingo of your child, this should help you out.
A vertical tongue piercing is what is known as the traditional tongue piercing. A barbell is inserted vertically through the tongue. This is the original oral piercing, and therefore the most common. There aren't many risks involved, because it has become such a routine piercing. However, this has also made it less desirable for people who want a unique piercing. The venom tongue piercing is when two barbells are inserted side-by-side at the tip of the tongue, similar to the placement of a snake's fangs. This piercing has also been around for a while, and is often combined with a vertical tongue piercing to have three piercings in the tongue.
A frenulum tongue piercing, also known as a tongue web piercing, is when the little flap that holds your tongue to the bottom of your mouth is pierced, usually with a ring, although it can also be a barbell. This piercing is completely hidden from view, so it works out great if you don't want anyone to know your tongue is pierced. People get it because they like to have something in their mouth to play with, but that they can easily hide. It is also a good complement to other oral piercings.
The newest and also rarest piercing is a horizontal tongue piercing. This is when a barbell is pierced horizontally through the front tip of your tongue. This is a pretty hard core piercing, for many reasons. It is very painful, difficult to do, and hard to find a piercer who will do it. Quite often, people who receive this piercing will take it out after a short amount of time, because frequently it will not completely heal. It is an extreme piercing, and only for those people who have lots of experience with piercings.
All of these piercings have different pros and cons, and all four of them can create problems if not properly cared for. However, a tongue piercing is now much more than the traditional oral piercing, and certainly the future will bring even more options for piercings inside one's mouth.
