Although figures for car crime are gradually reducing, there are still many concerns amongst most car owners. Most thieves are opportunists, and by simply taking a few extra precautions you can help prevent your car from being stolen.
One of the most common ways thieves operate is by taking your car keys, normally from inside your home. While most people are careful to lock their front door at night, many residents leave their keys in obvious places, such as the hallway table. For the seasoned criminal stealing the keys is a simple technique, which involves pushing a coat hanger though the letterbox. By keeping your keys out of reach, you can protect your car from one of the most common theft techniques.
While the majority of car thefts occur at night, some thieves tend to try their luck during the early morning. During the cold mornings which require your car engines to be heated, this often provides thieves with an ideal opportunity to make a move. As a precautionary method, avoid leaving your car unattended even if it is just for a few minutes.
Since the majority of thefts do actually occur at night, it is wise to take extra caution when locking your car up for the evening. Therefore, where possible try to park your car in well-lit areas and as close to your home as possible - if you have a garage then it is worth locking your car up at night in order to give it a bit of extra protection.
However, if you do not have a garage, but do have a driveway then it may be worth considering placing gates up at your home, to protect the car once it's in the driveway. While it is still possible for a thief to steal the car, car thieves tend to look for the easiest car to steal and a strong set of gates should force them to reconsider.
Another common mistake often made is leaving valuables on display within your car - mobile phones, wallets and bags are often left on the seats of cars and can quickly tempt a car thief to break into your car. This can easily be prevented from by taking the time to remove such goods from display. It is also wise to avoid keeping an extra set of keys within the car even if they are kept well hidden. To you they may seem hidden, but to the cunning car thief it may be a very common hiding location.
Keeping your car safe is a mixture of common sense and staying up to date with the latest ideas thieves are operating under; however, from having your wits about you and carefully keeping in mind useful car insurance tips, then you can remain versed on the latest criminal tricks.
