Speed up your Blackberry Pearl by freeing up memory
Keeping your Blackberry Pearl running at optimum speeds, you'll need to be careful your internal memory doesn't get bogged down with all sorts of garbage. If it's not watched closely, it will get full quickly and your phone will start to bog down. I'm going to talk about the biggest issues and how to manage them.
It's important to know how much memory is available on your Pearl. This can be done quickly by following these steps:
1. Select the little icon that mostly like looks like a wrench. This is the options icon.
2. Scroll to status and click.
3. The memory capacity of your phone is listed as FILE TOTAL.
4. FILE FREE lists the amount of memory available right now.
The bigger the number listed under FILE FREE, the more memory you have available and the faster your phone will run.
Clean out your inbox. I explain how to do this on my website, so I wont go into the details here.
Using the Content Compression Technique
If you don't already have content compression enabled on your Pearl, you'll want to do that next. I can't tell you exactly how much room this will open up since I've used it from day one. If you're not using it, it will give you a quick boost in available memory.
1. With the main screen open you'll see all of your icons on one screen (not the home screen).
2. Scroll to and click on options (should look like a wrench).
3. Scroll to and click on Security Options.
4. Move down to GENERAL SETTINGS and click.
5. Move down to CONTENT COMPRESSION and click.
6. If ENABLED is not selected, do so now.
7. Press the button just left of the pearl (it should have 7 little dots on it).
8. Move down to SAVE and click.
Content compression is now activated on your phone. From now on your movies, pictures, music, emails and calendar items will take up a lot less room on your phone. This will increase the amount of memory you have available.
Delete Applications You Dont Use
You should take some time to go through all of the applications installed on your Blackberry Pearl and delete any you know you don't need. I never play Brick Breaker, so I deleted it. There are a few programs you don't really need that you could probably delete.
1. Go to your main screen.
2. Scroll to and click on options (looks like a wrench).
3. Scroll to and click on Advanced Options.
4. Scroll to and click on Applications.
5. Wait for your Pearl to build the list of applications.
6. Scroll through and find any applications you dont want, need or use.
7. With that application selected, press the Blackberry (menu) button.
8. That's it. Now select any other programs you want to delete.
Note: Some applications will require you to restart your Blackberry Pearl before theyre completely removed.
Once you've completed these steps, you'll certainly notice how much faster your Pearl is running. Applications should open up much quicker. If they don't there are a number of other steps you can take that I'll explore later.
