How to Select An Engagement Ring
If you are going engagement ring shopping, you will have to know more or less what you are looking for, and what's available. The jeweler is going to ask you various questions about the type and style of ring you want, and it is helpful if you can answer them.
Engagement rings usually have three parts. The base part is the band, and you will have to decide what you would like the band to be made of. The most common is gold, white gold, platinum, and in some cases, silver. Attached to the band is the setting, which is usually made of the same precious metal as the band, and it is what will hold the stone in place. That brings us to the third and most important part of an engagement ring, the stone. This can be any number of precious stones, with the most common being a diamond, or something that looks like a diamond, such as cubic zirconia.
Again, it is helpful to know what kind of stone you are looking for before going to the jeweler. Will you be looking for diamond engagement rings? Cubic zirconia engagement rings? Perhaps you would like engagement rings with a specific stone?
Once you have decided this, you will need to know what cut you want the stone to be. When it comes to diamonds and cubic zirconia, there are various ways in which you can have the stone cut, which change the way your ring looks.
A round cut diamond/cubic zirconia is the most classic style. The stone is cut in a cone shape, with the pointed end at the bottom. This makes the top round, which allows it to show of the brilliance of the diamond. This cut looks good in almost any setting, and is the most popular style.
A princess cut is similar to the round cut, except that it is in the shape of a pyramid. The square end of the stone is at the top, giving it a large, elegant look. It is the second most popular after the round cut.
For a truly sophisticated look, try the emerald cut. The stone is cut in a rectangular shape, and does a great job of showing of the stones clarity. This one looks especially nice with cubic zirconia or a very expensive diamond, to show off the stone's clarity.
Two less common options, the oval and marquis cut, are also used to show off a stone's brilliance, similar to a round cut. However, the shape is slightly longer, and give both of these cuts a nice, elegant look.
With this knowledge in mind, you are well-prepared to pick out the engagement ring that want. Next step is to find a jewel and jewelry store that you are comfortable with, and that has some rings that you are interested in.
