Computer Runs Slow? It May Be Time To Look Into a Driver Scanner

By Ed Lathrop

Many times, a computer will slow down, sometimes aggravatingly so only to find there were incidents of malware to blame. Other times, a computer will lose speed because there was corruption in the registry. These are common problems and usually running a spyware/virus cleaner and registry cleaner respectively will solve the problem. However, what happens when neither of these things is to blame for the slow running computer?

There are other reasons a computer could slow down and perform erratically. In this article, we will discuss one often-overlooked contributor to bad computer behavior. Also, we will talk about how you can deal with this problem.

Communicating Through Drivers

A computer needs a software program so it can talk to its peripherals, like the monitor or the printer, or anything else the computer is hooked up to. This type of software program is called a device driver. Sometimes they are installed from a CD-Rom and sometimes they are already a part of the operating system.

Either way, a computer needs to have this software so it can interpret the commands being sent from the hardware and so it can send instruction back to that hardware.

One problem arises from the fact early run drivers often need to be upgraded very soon after their release. So, if a computer owner is not aware of this, he or she could have installed a piece of software that will tend to cause problems with the computer's overall operation.

The Generic Driver

Sometimes drivers which are installed, especially when the product being installed was a heavily discounted one, are not the exact driver for the product but the best fit that could be found at no or little cost. Needless to say this type of driver can also cause instability and loss of speed for the computer in which it was installed.

Not all drivers are duds from the get-go. There are times there is nothing at all wrong with a driver but after Microsoft does one of its surprise operating system updates, the driver will no longer be a perfect fit between the OS and the hardware.

Yes, Drivers Need Periodic Upgrades

By now you can see how a device driver can cause a whole bundle of trouble for a computer. Unless the operator is constantly searching for the best one at any time, the computer could start to run slow and become unstable.

I know, it sounds like a tall order to find the driver causing a computer slow down and certainly, at one time it was a mammoth task. Now however, there are driver scanners that do all the work for us. This includes finding a replacement or upgraded driver as needed.

I believe a driver scanner, at least a good one, may end up being the most important computer tool to come along in a long time. I also believe every computer owner should have one installed on each one of his or her PCs. This tool, along with a spyware/virus cleaner and a registry cleaner have the ability to keep a computer operating efficiently and without slowing down for a long time to come!
