Fly To The Beaches for Some Summer Fun

Jetlag is a real condition that affects the body both physically and mentally. It comes as a result of flying on an airplane into a different time zone. This is one reason why many people choose to stay on land and go on tours for their vacations, so they don't have to fly. Many people have to deal with getting seasick when they go on tours, however. Not everyone has that option, however. Many businesspersons or professional athletes have to fly for their profession to get where they need to be quickly.

Our body has an internal clock telling us what time it is, and when we fly, we are getting into a different time zone quicker than our body can adjust. It's as if we are breaking the internal clock, so our body feels disoriented and tired until it can catch up with the time. Other symptoms of jetlag are tiredness, poor concentration, headaches and inability to sleep at night. Often people feel so sluggish their first vacation day from flying that all they do is lay on the beaches all day trying to recuperate.

There is the believe that jetlag is more severe when you're traveling east than west because the rhythm of the body (circadian rhythm) extends up to 27 hours when flying west, thus helping the body to adjust to the changes and eliminating or lessening jetlag.

This is no quick cure for jetlag, but there are ways to deal with it. Try to spend as much time outside as you can, as natural light seems to help the body adjust quicker. This may not be that difficult if your vacation is centered around outdoor activities.

Try to adjust your body schedule before you leave by eating, sleeping and doing your regular activities at the time of the new time zone where you will be traveling to. This is possible if you are going on an extended stay. For those that travel every few days, however, this is almost impossible. Their bodies seldom have a chance to adjust.

Athletes or professionals whose performance is affected by jetlag may want to arrive at their scheduled destination a few days ahead of time to allow their body to adjust to the time difference. This may not be possible for some athletes that are on the go every few days, such as the NFL players during the football season. The Major League baseball players also fly all the way across the United States for a series of game. Their bodies just begin to adjust and they have to fly again.
