Reasons to Explore the Big Apple

By Isla Campbell

If you love the vibrancy and excitement that most cities offer, then you'll love the Big Apple. Designed for business and pleasure, there is plenty to do here with five separate boroughs to explore.

There are of course certain landmarks which define the city itself. The Brooklyn Bridge is a classic example, and it has spanned the East River since its opening in 1883. Two of the five boroughs, Manhattan and Brooklyn, are connected thanks to this impressive bridge.

If you want a spectacular view of the city you should head straight to the Empire State Building. There are two floors which permit you to look out onto the streets below - the 86th floor, and if you really have a head for heights, the 102nd floor is also available to visit. Dozens of films have also used the building for inspiration - most notably King Kong.

Of course, the city is also well known for its shopping. You might automatically think of stores such as Bloomingdale's and Saks, but in reality there are plenty of other great places to visit too - and many of them won't be quite as hard on your wallet either! For example, there are lots of flea markets offering great deals on all kinds of things. Try the Soho antiques fair or the Hell's Kitchen flea market just to get started.

It's good to visit some of the more unusual attractions too. You might have to do a bit of digging, but going off the more familiar trails is well worth it when you are visiting the Big Apple.

The Hall of Fame for Great Americans is certainly not to be missed. Situated in the Bronx, the Hall sweeps round and takes in an impressive array of busts. You won't find too many really famous names here, but that is what gives this attraction its must see status. There are also a few former Presidents, but to give you an idea of the offbeat nature of this attraction, the man who wrongly announced that he invented anaesthesia is also recognised!

You can see a lot of the city by taking a tour as well. The East River offers one such way to see the Big Apple, but there is nothing quite like getting in a helicopter for a completely unique way to see all the best that New York has to offer.

When you book your stay, make sure you opt for somewhere that is central to the attractions you would really like to visit. And if you stay on a higher floor in a nice hotel, you won't have to venture too far to see the first sensational view of the day.
