How a Skeptic Came to Love a Wireless Reader
I received a Wireless Reader last fall as a gift, and I admit my first instinct was to cringe. The person who purchased the gift bought it because he knew I was a huge reader.
When I'm not reading, I'm thinking about reading. I read when I eat, I read on work breaks, I read in line at the grocery store, and if I'm traveling anywhere, I'm reading every minute I can - or listening to audio books while I drive.
So why did I cringe when I first laid eyes on my new wireless reader? First, I had an idea how expensive they are. Not only did I feel intimidated by how much my friend had spent, but I felt pressured. The only way the cost could be justified was if this truly turned out to be, The Gift of a Lifetime.
The second reason I felt uncomfortable was I thought I wouldn't like using the reader. I'm old-fashioned. I love browsing libraries and bookstores, not just to hunt out books, but to experience them.
I love the look of endless rows of book spines on shelves. I love end cap and table displays that highlight the graphics, images and designs of book covers. I like the feel of a book in my hand, the smell of both old and new books, and flipping through pages.
By contrast, the reader looked cold and mechanical, more like a big calculator than a sturdy, comfortable, REAL book.
Still, despite all my initial skepticism, I put on a big smile and vowed to myself I would give this wireless reader a fair chance. It might come in handy as some sort of storage device, or serve as a fun distraction when I was bored with reading whatever book I had in my bag. I thanked my friend and set about learning how to use it the next day.
To say I was stunned at how quickly I took to the reader is an understatement. I quickly became obsessed with it. It was incredibly easy to learn to use, very lightweight, and easy to read on.
Not only that, the selection I have to choose from when I want to read is nothing short of amazing. Blogs, newspapers, audio books, and of course ebooks, all there whenever I want them. No need to go to the library, the shop or even to log on to my PC.
I'm now convinced, my wireless reader IS the gift of a lifetime. There are thousands and thousands of free ebooks available. I also use an online book-swapping site to exchange titles with other readers.
As for the price, well - considering I received it as a gift and I don't need to pay wireless charges, connection fees or a service fee, and I have yet to feel the need to purchase any ebooks, all this reading is mine for free. Even if I had paid for my reader, I'd still say it's more than worth it.
So if you're a big reader or you know someone who is, give a wireless reader some serious thought. You're liable to be very pleasantly surprised to find how well it suits your lifestyle.
