What Is Ringworm And How To Treat It The Natural Way
Ringworm or Tinea has little to do with any kind of worms as the name suggests. It is a fungal infection caused by Dermatophytes that leave a characteristic red ring around the areas of infection. It is mainly caused due to excessive sweating in the body or the lack of fatty acids on the scalp as in the case of small children. Some wounds can be followed by ringworm. People who keep pets are also known to be susceptible to this disease.
It can affect any body part. However it is usually associated with the areas around the groin. In the foot it is popularly known as Athletes foot, which is characterized by scaly and cracking skin between the toes. When it affects the scalp, typical scaly and yellow crusty patches appear which eventually give way to hair fall in those areas, causing bald patches. In the groin, it typically starts as single or multiple rashes, which gradually grow in area, to eventually form a ring. The infected areas feel very itchy and can be quite an embarrassment. The highly contagious nature of this disease makes it quite a common one, especially in children.
Although various prescription and OTC drugs are available to treat ringworm, natural cures are equally effective and should be preferred. Among the many natural remedies for ringworm, the below mentioned ones are known to be most effective:
Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV): Apply over the affected areas with cotton swabs, 2 or 3 times a day. Alongside, ingest one tsp of ACV for better results.
Tea Tree Oil: Touted as one of the best cures for ringworm, apply tea tree oil 2 or 3 times a day over affected areas.
Raw Papaya: Rub raw papaya slices over affected areas or make a paste of raw papaya powder with water and apply.
Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO): Although slow in action, when VCO is applied topically and ingested orally (10ml, twice a day on an empty stomach) over a long period of time, positive results are guaranteed. Besides, coconut oil also acts as a good moisturizer for dry scaly skin.
Mustard Seeds: Apply over the affected areas as a paste.
Holy Basil: Grind leaves and keep the paste on with a bandage over night.
Butea: Apply a paste of this herb mixed with lime juice and apply over affected areas.
Cassia: Apply juice of cassia leaves over the affected parts twice a day.
The above remedies should be used on clean and dry skin. In cases of severe infection a fruit diet is advised. Simultaneously a mild enema can be administered to cleanse the bowels because any infection, especially of the skin, requires cures to be administered both within and without.
