The Enjoyment Of Painting On Canvas

By Corey Palmer

If you go into any art gallery in the country, you are bound to find a large number of oil on canvas paintings. In fact, you will probably find that it is the most popular form of art in the gallery that you visit.

Painting art on canvas has been a popular art form for a large number of years. Even before the canvas and oil paints were invented, people found themselves making paint with berries and plants and painting on rock faces and walls. Kind of an ancient graffiti without getting arrested!

One of the main thing to remember when you start painting as a new hobby is that if you are used to drawing with pencil or other medium, the paintbrush is an entirely different tool to get used to. The best thing is that you have to make sure not to get discouraged and realize that there will be a time needed to get used to the way a paint brush needs to be used. Just like anything else, you will eventually get used to it and find it as easy as using anything else.

Next comes the canvas. There are many types including canvas boards, rolled canvas, stretched canvas and canvas mats. Try using them all over time and decide on your favorite and use it. You will probably find different things that you like and not like about each type of canvas.

Once you have chosen your brush and canvas, you will need to decide on the type of paint that you want to use. Oil or acrylic. Oil paints are slow drying and may be good for art pieces that you plan on doing over a period of time. Oil paint can easily be rejuvenated using things like paint thinner, turpentine or the like.

Acrylic paint tends to dry a lot faster. This makes the paint a lot easier to use for projects that you plan on starting and finishing on the same day. You will also find that acrylic paints are a lot easier to wash out of your brush as opposed to a brush that was used to paint oil paintings.

After you decided on your paint choice, the best thing to do is just experiment and practice. Remember that art is about experimenting. Have fun with mixing paint colors and seeing what you can come up with. Use different sizes and types of canvases, different sized brushes and different types of paints. Art is all about this.
