The Future Of Laptops And SD Cards

By Brian Harrison
Mar 11, 2009
Is it just me or do the latest crop of so called advanced laptops just not cut it. I must admit Ive been in the technology game now for over 20 years and seen many things that of amazed and excited me. Ive also seen many things that have shocked me in the sense of products and ideas I though would never catch on, but that's the fun technology, you can never second guess the next big thing.

So I'm going to have a go at predicting and in some ways influencing the design of the laptop of the future and the sd card brain as I like to call it. The idea behind this article is to give you my ideas on the design of the perfect laptop.

Its a tall order I know but most of the great inventions came from sheds and people who did not understand the term boundaries. It cant just be me who is frustrated by the constraints we are subjected to in the name of global technical compatibility.

So where do we start? Well I guess we need to start by breaking it down to its component parts, operating system and hardware. Lets start with the operating system.

Operating Systems
MS Windows
Over the last 15 years the dominant operating system as of course been Microsoft Windows and all though this operating system changed the way we live and do business it is becoming more and more irrelevant as time goes by. I honestly think Windows stopped being a world leader with the introduction of Windows XP some would say earlier.

The main problem with Windows is that it must be compatible with past versions of operating system and applications and increases in size with every iteration. The latest version of Vista is the culmination of all things to all men and useful for none too big, to heavy and to slow.

Linux
What about Linux I here you say. Well I can see the appeal of a free operating system that is small and efficient, like Tiny Linux or Ubunto that already can be run from and sd card or USB stick but they would need some work to ensure they met all my needs.

What I need is an operating system that serves the purpose nothing more. Stripped down, lean and mean but with total functionality..hmmm oh yes just like the modern smart phones. The mobile phone industry has several advantages of Windows, Linux and other operating systems in the sense that they are controlled in size and not restricted by compatibility issues. Mobile code writers talk in kbs not gbs when it comes to operating systems.

Its amazing what you can do with 128kb of code if you are forced to. I like the Symbian OS or even the new Android OS from google, both operating systems are free, small and can be adapted to fit most environments.

The other thing I like about mobile phone technology is the security. The sim card used by mobile phone companies comes as standard with hardware encryption built in. This would be great if we based are operating system around the sim.

Operating Systems on SD Cards
So what I'm looking for is a operating system that comes on sd card, contains my mobile phone sim and security hardware, network connectivity in the form of 3g and WI-FI and all the storage I could want. SD Card standards are already pushing forward with 2tb and more so storage would not by a problem from that point of view.

Great that's the main brains of the system sorted then and all on a handy sd card or USB stick. Ill leave you to flesh out the details.

The application can be developed by anybody as long as they fit within the guidelines and are preferably free. They can also be stored on the sd card along with everything else.

Hardware
One of the biggest problems with laptop commuters is they are very complex and more to the point fragile. This is mainly due to the fact the contain so many parts that can be easily damaged. We are finally seeing a move away from the trusty old hard disk drive towards flash based memory and this is a big step in the right direction.

My perfect laptop should contain one chip that controls graphics and number crunching duties, a keyboard and screen, nothing more. All the important information should be supplied by are new communication sd card that contains are storage, operating system, security and network connection requirements.

This should allow the laptop maker to reduce the price dramatically to $100 or so putting the emphasis on the sd card instead of hardware. This also allows us to take all our information and computer setting to any other compatible laptop or computer. Just imagine being able to insert your sd card computer brain into any computer and have your personal computer settings come up just has if you where working from your own laptop.

The other advantage of this methodology is how easy it is to protect all your information, simply remove your sd card and hide it or take it with your. Also don't worry if you lose it because its fully encrypted so no one can steal your top secret recipe for fudge cake etc.
