Accelerated Fragmentation Of The Internet Market

By Mark Kimathi
Mar 12, 2009
Every one, literally every one can start an internet business from nearly anywhere in the world. There are case studies of 15 year olds making thousands just as there are of 65 year olds.

This trend is expected to grow. And it is sending some jitters among some. John Resee of Income, a celebrated veteran internet marketer explains, "There's massive a revolution about to occur all over the world and those that understand it can get rich. In fact, this revolution has already begun, but in the next several years it's going to change everything online.

But those that ignore this revolution or fail to understand it, will become merely a fraction of the success they could have become, or quite possibly get out of business altogether. Beyond the next five years, internet marketing will experience exponential chaos. Businesses marketing online will experience massive rates of failure. It will become nothing short of financial devastation for many.

According to the U.S Small Business Administration, 95% of small businesses fail within the first 5 years. In the not-so distant future, because of the revolution already in motion, this figure will become more like 99% will fail in the first 5yrs. Why? Its rather simple actually. Its because of something I call Accelerated Market Fragmentation. Essentially exploding mass competition in nearly every possible market online"

This ideology of imminent burst of competition is often projected from Chris Anderson's book The Long Tail, which Resse does reference. The long tail explains that the internet market is like a comet. It has a dense head followed by a very long tail of dust.

The head of the comet entails all major keyword for example the term "mobile phone". These major keywords drive millions of visitors a day to the sites that are well ranked for them. According to Andersons, the huge companies will fight tooth and nail to control such keywords making it too competitive for smaller business to get a share.

However it's not all doom as there is the nearly infinite long tail. This will include more specific keywords like Siemens AX75 which only drive tens or just few hundereds of visitors within the mobile phone market. Andersons recommends for business to target such longtail markets to survive.

But according to Resse Accelerated Market Fragmentation brought about by GrandMa Inc and her grandsons will rev up competition that even these long tail markets will be overflowing with competition. And this is attributed to ease of entry into the internet market due to the Web 2.0.

This will happens this way, as competition increases for the keyword "Siemens AX75" people will shift focus to compete for the keyword "Siemens AX75 earphone". And with time you will not be able to find a niche that will not be super competitive.

But Russell Wright in his report, Market Domination disagrees. His view is that overwhelming competition is yet another illusion of internet marketing.
