Great Leaders Are Great People

Leadership is the ability to bring together a group of people without any or very few commonalities for a common purpose. In order to do this, leaders must possess certain qualities in order to be great. Not everybody has leadership qualities and not all leaders possess all the qualities to be a great leader.

Communication - Communication is the most important quality for a leader to possess. If a leader is unable to communicate goals, criticisms, desires, etc. then their team will never be focused on a single purpose. A leader is also the middle man between his team and upper management, therefore he must be able to communicate on different levels - to his team and to his supervisors.

Honesty and Integrity - These two qualities are essential for respect as a leader. Without them, you can still be a leader, but you will be feared instead of respected. Leaders should always be honest with their team. Dishonesty leads to distrust.

Has Vision - Any great leader must have vision. They must be able to see the big picture and translate that picture to their team.

Reads People and Knows Self- Leaders must be able to read people to choose the proper team. The ideal team consists of people who are strong in the areas that the leader is weak.

Listens Well - Great leaders should be able to listen to their teams. They should be able to express sympathy, empathy, and concern for their team-s problems. However, listening to your team is not enough. A great leader is able to read between the lines and understand body language. Otherwise, the leader will not know what is going on within their group.

Ability to Act - Besides being able to listen to their team, a leader must be able to act responsibly on their concerns. If the leader is a good listener and has the ability to read body language, then he will have a plethora of knowledge about their team. They should act upon this knowledge to fulfill their team-s needs.

Consistency - Leaders can not be effective without consistency. Consistency allows the team to grow and learn, because they know what to expect.

Stands by their Decisions - Leaders should be able to stand by and defend their decisions. Even if the leader realizes that he could have made a better decision, he must believe that he made the best decision given the information that he had at that time. If he does not believe this, then he will not be able to defend his decision.
