Online Dating And Marriage With Foreigners
Over the years, a distinct type of online dating system has developed. This involves matching predominantly Western men with foreign women - usually for marriage.
Now one should be careful not to brand just any love affair that began with internet dating as a "mail order bride" phenomenon. Many inter-racial couples did not meet via a dating service at all. And contrary to popular belief, those who do, are not automatically married.
If you are one of these people, your reasons for using an international matchmaking service is yours alone. The fact you use online dating services is complicated enough.
To think that one is looking for a bride or groom outside one's race, culture or country brings even more pressure. Especially when your own friends and family are unsupportive. We do wish to give you some advice though.
For the Western man (or woman), the process usually involves having to go through profiles of various, prospective partners. You then send an e-mail to one or more of these "candidates," at which point the online dating site is out of the picture. As you exchange mails, you two can decide if you like each other and would be willing to meet in person.
Usually the non-Westerner or the man goes to see the other. After one or more visits, you may decide to get married, or bring him/her over to your country and marry there. Now this would require a "marriage-based" visa. Be prepared in advance as this is a fairly complex matter that involves lots of paperwork, money and dealings with various government bodies.
Both the Westerner and the foreigner must keep several things in mind:
1) Internet-based relationships between a Westerner and a foreign woman is often viewed with suspicion, both by society and the law. Be prepared to give hard evidence (letters, bank transfers, joint lease, photos, a baby, etc.) of a genuine marriage.
2) Some Western men have been known to abuse foreign women. As such, any Western man who goes dating via the Internet - especially an American - may be suspect in the eyes of both his government and that of his spouse/fiancee.
3) Some foreign men and women want to marry Westerners, especially Americans, just to live in a more prosperous country than their own. Again, expect criticism, discrimination and/or doubt.
4) Online relationships always carry a risk. You never know if the person is really what they claim to be. If possible, bring a friend or relative for your first meeting, or do it in a safe, public place.
5) Beware of disclosing personal information about yourself. Know that this opens you to communication with possible stalkers and sex criminals. Better forewarned!
6) Honesty is an essential key to success in all kinds of relationships. Be honest about your intentions and expectations. If you are a Western man looking for an "old-fashioned" woman, be clear about what you think that is. She may have other ideas.
Interracial marriage can be very rewarding for both parties, and many say it is better than any they had before. But it faces more challenges, namely the dangers of Internet-based dating, a complicated visa and immigration system, and the prejudices of society toward such relationships.
