Cold Sore Treatment Alert - Is Your Diet Causing Cold Sores?
The foods you want to avoid with cold sores are the foods that contain higher amounts of arginine and lower amounts of lysine.
High arginine foods will cause a lot of trouble if you are prone to cold sores. The herpes simplex virus needs a lot of the amino acid arginine to create new virus particles. This replication process is the base cause of all cold sores.
If you could spare a moment, I will share with you some of the foods I have discovered to cause cold sores nearly every time. Also, you will understand a great cold sore treatment that dramatically reduces cold sore events.
The key to cold sore outbreaks, or lack of them, are the two amino acids arginine and lysine. These two proteins are present in most food in varying amounts.
But first you should know a little about the virus.
The cause of all oral herpes (cold sores) is the herpes simplex virus. It is an extremely tiny, sub-microscopic virus particle. When active it will enter a nerve cell and turn the cell into a virus factory.
When finished, it destroys the cell to release the new virus. This destruction of many cells creates the cold sore ulcer.
The primary protein needed to create the herpes virus particles is arginine. Your cells have a special storage area for arginine.
Lysine is a similar protein and is stored in the same location as arginine. The lysine protein will not work for creating new herpes virus. The cells must have arginine for this purpose.
The more lysine available to your cells, the more of it they will store and the less room for arginine.
Because the herpes simplex virus must have arginine to replicate, a shortage of this protein will stop, reduce or prevent cold sores from occurring.
One way to accomplish this is to reduce the intake of high arginine foods. If you get frequent cold sores, this should be your first step.
Here are some foods that are high in arginine and low in lysine.
1. Chocolate
2. Nuts of all types
3. Seeds of all types - such as sunflower and flax
4. Oats, wheat and most other grains
5. Shellfish such as oysters and clams
6. Most vegetables are neutral but you may want to avoid squash, rutabagas and carrots
Now, I know what you are thinking - these are normally some pretty healthy foods to be doing without.
You are right.
It is often difficult or unhealthy to avoid certain foods in your diet.
If this is true for you, and you get a lot of cold sores, here is a better way to accomplish the same thing.
Reducing your arginine intake will reduce your stored arginine - but so will increasing your lysine intake. Remember, the more lysine stored means less room for arginine.
Here is a short list of the highest lysine foods to add to your diet.
1. Dairy - especially cheese and yogurt (Wisconsin-made cheese is absolutely the best)
2. Fish - especially Flounder and Halibut
3. Chicken and eggs
4. Apples
However, the best cold sore treatment for increasing your lysine and decreasing stored arginine is to take lysine capsules.
They are cheap and available nearly anywhere. It is so easy to adjust your dosage to offset any arginine foods you eat. For example, eat some chocolate, take a capsule.
Look for the 500 milligram capsules. Capsules seem to work much faster than tablets. Lysine is a safe and common protein. Many folks take eight to ten of these capsules daily during oral herpes cold sores with excellent success.
Reducing arginine and increasing lysine is one of the top three cold sore treatment methods used by millions of sufferers today.
Lysine therapy is all that many use to stop and prevent cold sores in their lives. It surely should be the first remedy you should try.
Yes, it may not be the total cold sore treatment for you, but it will be an important part of your victory over oral herpes cold sores.
