Want To Be A Carpenter?

By Corey Palmer
Mar 18, 2009
Carpenters share one thing in common. It's not their uncanny ability to apply geometrical concepts and apply Pythagora's theorem but rather their talent or skill in exerting manual labor with a high degree of dexterity and with a certain level of adeptness achieved through hours of attentive involvement in the practice of such an old craft.

The field of carpentry will also likely test or measure ones academic competence in related subjects. Math and Drafting provide great insights to the whole essence of woodworking. Numbers may be an important part of carpentry but the acquisition of this knowledge is no good to those who can't handle carpentry tools and basics because of physical limitations.

The following section may prove useful to readers eager to begin and finish that dog house over the weekend.

One of the oldest carpenters that any Christian could remember is Jesus' surrogate father, Joseph. Jesus started early on as a carpenter before preaching. This is a great advice to people who would want to learn carpentry and make a living or a hobby out of it. The mastery of anything, such as the writing skills of a seasoned journalist, always begins with the frequency of putting something into practice.

The next step would be to familiarize oneself with the necessary tools to succeed in the job (or hobby); traditional tools such as hammers and saws up to the more modern electrical tools, or power tools, such as hand planers and electric drills. It is also best to know about how to properly handle these tools, what techniques to use and when to use them (or when not to!).

After equipping yourself with the basics, an apprenticeship program is the next rational step to take. A hands-on approach to carpentry work helps with the development of the various skills applied in specific areas of woodworking such as furniture and cabinet making, the laying out of wooden floors, stairwells, and staircases, the repair and refurbishing of old wood items, etc.

I can sill distinctly recall my Father telling me about this dream house and how he'd be the one to build it himself. As a kid however, my concept of building things were based on the foundations that Warner Brothers shared via Looney Tunes. Carpentry, the way cartoons did it, seemed too easy. Everything just fit exactly as they should and nothing was ever troublesome. But of course in time, we mature and learn to deduce: Carpentry is one great job!

And as how personal life coaches would put it: Go ahead and be the best that you can be!
