The Story of the Dr Who Ood

By Jon Kelly
Mar 18, 2009
Like many of the Dr Who characters the Ood have been developed and given a history. The Ood have appeared in a couple of episodes and their story has been fed to us across the episodes.

The physical appearance of the Ood tells us quite a lot about them. The Ood are humanoid, but they have soft tentacles on the lower part of their face. The mouth is not an important feature to the Ood as they communicate telepathically, hence their mouths being covered by tentacles is not a limitation. This is certainly not the physical evolution of a race of fighters. This vulnerability tells us that they are probably a peaceful nation. Every Ood carries something in its hand. In their natural state they carry an external brain. This brain carries all their personal identity. It is a thoughtful and respectful race who would carry so much important information in such a vulnerable manner. The Ood are all dressed alike, with no differentiation between male and females. Their clothing is long soft covering clothing, again, no sign of protection or amour. So simply from looking at the Ood we can tell that they are not a threatening, aggressive race, they are certainly not a nation intent of distruction.

The appearance of the Ood is probably one of the reasons why they ended up as a slave race to the humans. The humans may fight a race such as the Sontaran, but they would certainly not try or succeed at enslaving such a race. The Ood, however, with their non aggressive appearance make an obvious slave. To allow the humans to communicate with the Ood, the humans replace their external brain with a translating device. This removes all their individuality and hence they become the perfect slaves.

The other time when we encounter the Ood, they are more aggressive, however this is explained as the story progresses. The Ood have for some reason become almost possessed. The Doctor and Rose discover that this is their survival instinct. The hive mind has been captured and it is using telepathy to control the Ood to try to instigate its release and hence the return of the mind and the Ood to their home. The Ood mind was held captive for two hundred years. During this time it adapted to influence the Ood specifically to change their natural attitudes and behaviour to become a powerful force which could ultimately save the race from their enslavement.

We are told that after the Ood hive mind is freed that they return to the planet of the Ood. The home of the Ood is believed to be Ood Sphere, a planet close to the Sense Sphere Planet. This saving of the Ood means that the Ood are now indebted to the Doctor and we may well see them again as allies for the Doctor in his continuing battle to keep order in the universe and to fight the evil which puts at risk the future of all planets.
