So You Want To Own A Franchise?

By Art Gib

You have always wanted to start your own business, but are not entirely comfortable with the idea of "going it on your own." Perhaps owning a franchise would be the right solution for you. Here are some things to think about and consider as you ponder your possibilities.

-- Set a budget right away. Although most franchisees provide flexible payment plans when you are starting up, their costs vary. You must be realistic when you are starting a business and never, ever bite off more than you can chew or afford. You may not be in a financial position to be able to open the first franchise you consider seriously, so be flexible.

-- Choose carefully. Once your finances are in order and you've set some parameters within which to work, it's time to really start shopping around. Traditionally, franchises are more likely to succeed than individually owned businesses, but owning one is never a guarantee.

There are virtually thousands from which to choose so there is no need to take undue chances with your time and money. Select one with good national name recognition so you know they'll probably still be popular down the road: going with what's popular at the moment may be tempting, but try to think ahead to the long term viability of the franchise.

Find a need in your community and fill it. It's probably not in your best interest to open up a pizza or sandwich franchise on a block that's already saturated with them! So either change your franchise choice if you're committed to remaining in a particular neighborhood, or stick with the franchise and select a more desirable location where you'll have better odds at succeeding.

-- Know the ins and outs of what your business will be up front. Franchisers usually have strict operating procedures, rules for ownership, and marketing techniques that you must abide by.

If you have chosen a franchise instead of your own start-up, this is probably an attractive idea to you. After all, it takes the guess work out of running your business and you'll have a pretty good idea what to expect. In exchange for your paying them fees, find out what the franchiser will offer you in return. Will they provide you with training, marketing, and all other kinds of support to help you succeed? If not, look elsewhere: you just don't need the headaches or the added risk of not making it.

Good luck!
