The Art of Becoming an Entrepreneur

According to the entrepreneurial experts, a recession can often be one of the best times to start up a business. While many of the bigger corporations are experiencing stagnation or decline in the marketplace, it can be an ideal opportunity for smaller or new start-up businesses to play catch up.

Not only that, but providing they have the capital, it can be a great opportunity to buy cheap land or office space, or to obtain raw materials at a lower cost. If you are a small business then you will be less required to cope with such severe internal conditions - like staff layoffs - which allows you to focus more on customer service: this, say the professionals, should be a primary focus.

As such, there are a very large proportion of organisations operating in the UK. However, with a high failure rate - often within the first year - there are also many businesses which do not make it. So, what does it really take to become a successful entrepreneur?

First off, there needs to be a solid business idea. You can be the most dedicated and passionate individual in the world, but if there is no market for the product or service you want to offer, then it simply won't work out in the long run.

Therefore, it is essential to research the marketplace, do your homework and speak to your target audience. In doing this, you'll be able to establish if there is a demand or desire for your idea, as well as the potential it has for succeeding. It is also very important to look at any competitors as they will be a good indicator of what (not) to do.

You must also be honest. For example, if feedback received suggests your idea is theoretically sound, but may need a few adjustments, then listen and make those changes. This applies equally to an already established business: by asking for customer feedback, you are encouraging the establishment of a client-customer relationship.

If you don't listen to, or act upon such suggestions for improvement, this can ultimately damage any trust or confidence they have in you. Consequently, don't just make alterations because you think they're right; make them because they will be of benefit to both the business and the customer.

Setting realistic goals is another must. Here, you need to determine exactly what you want to achieve, where you want to be within a specific time frame and how you expect to accomplish it. However, although it pays to look at the big picture, bear in mind that it is sensible to walk before you go off running - as a result, make sure your aims are practical.

If you want to start up your own business, now may well be the best time to get going. Just make sure you do your research and fully understand how to be a successful entrepreneur. In doing so, you will be in the best position to succeed.
