What You Have To Do When You Are Living With Dementia
Living with dementia can be very hard for a person to come to terms with. If you have just found out that you have been diagnosed with having dementia, you are going to need a great deal of support and reassurance. You will first have to find out what this disease means, and how it is going to affect you.
There are many different types of dementia. It is important for you to understand which form of this disease you have developed. It is worthwhile knowing that all types of dementia affect the cells in the brain. The only difference is they affect different parts of the brain, some are also more progressive than others.
Living with dementia doesn't mean that you are alone. You can find out all you need to know about dementia from a social worker, your doctor, or a carer's active listening line. These people deal with dementia on a daily basis, they are there to help you understand what you are going to be facing. Don't be afraid to express any worries or concerns that you may have.
Unfortunately when you live with dementia, you will need to understand that things are going to get a worse for you over time. It is worthwhile before your dementia starts to progress further, that you get your personal affairs in order.
Sort out all unwanted letters that you have, keep the important ones that you need in a box. You could put your utility bills, insurance papers, bank and building society statements in it. Make sure you mark the box so you know what is in there. It is always worthwhile to tell someone who you trust where you are keeping these boxes.
You will also have to think about your financial arrangements if you are living with dementia. You are going to have to give up work at some point. Make sure you find out all you can about what benefits you can claim and help with your mortgage is available, if you have a one. You can do this over the phone or visit your local welfare benefits office.
At some point you are going to have to discuss with your family where you are going to live. Your dementia will get to the stage where you can no longer take care of yourself. A family member might want you to go and live with them, or you might decide you would prefer a care home. If you decide on a care home, ask if can you get help in paying for this. Express your wishes to your family, you have to do what is right for you and your family.
Try to stay positive as you possibly can. Concentrate on the things you can do, rather than the things you can't do. Take care of yourself and try to eat a healthy diet. Don't forget to tell your loved ones how much they mean to you. Spend as much time with your family as you can. Enjoy this time now, don't waste a day of it, because living with dementia is a situation that is only going to get worse.
