Buying The Right Dog House

By Chris Smith
Mar 22, 2009
"Being in the dog house" can actually be a reward with today's array of luxurious and stylish dog houses! Modern pet owners spare no expense when it comes to their beloved pooches, and dog houses are no exception. Some dog houses seem more appropriate for a fancy children's playhouse or even a slightly undersized cabin.

A dog house is much more than the creation of a handyman one afternoon. These can be works of art, suitable for indoor or outdoor use. Dog houses can be insulated or even come with heating and running water. If you are looking for the perfect home for your dog, here are some of the many options that are available to you.

A Home within a Home

Whether you are crate training your dog or just want an elegant way to give them their own space, an interior dog house can provide the solution you desire. These structures are meant to mimic a "den," where your dog can retreat when they want a nap or just to get away from the business of your house.

Some of these interior dog houses include sturdy doors so that they can also function as crates to keep your animals contained while you are away from home. Interior dog houses are made from materials such as finished woods and padded fabric. While some look like a classic dog house, others look like mini palaces, complete with second stories and turrets. There are even dog houses disguised to look like pieces of furniture. You can keep guests on their toes when they see your dog suddenly appear from within what had appeared to be an end table!

The Friendly Outdoors

If you plan on keeping your dog outdoors for long stretches of time, especially overnight or during periods of rain, snow or extreme heat, it is important to provide them with a comfortable spot where they can get shelter and relax. A simple structure is probably enough for most dogs if they spend the majority of their time and nights indoors.

However, for outdoor dogs, a sturdy structure that will keep them safe, dry and warm is essential. There are many such options available, ranging from simple plastic houses to handcrafted structures that coordinate with the style and color of your own home. For colder climates, you can choose an insulated home with a wind barrier door that lets your dog in but keeps the elements out.

Choosing a Dog House

No matter what type of dog house you are looking for, it is essential to buy one that is appropriately sized to fit your dog. Your pet should be able to stand up easily without their head touching the top of the house. They should also be able to turn around without struggling and extend their paws fully in front of them when lying down.

Once you have determined the size, analyze how much you are willing to spend and how important the appearance is to you and your family. Then have fun looking at all the options. Whether you want a log cabin dog house, one that mimics the colonial style of your home, or a dog house that will double as a coffee table, your options abound!
