How to Fix Chipped Teeth
In many family, chipped teeth are something to be avoided at all costs. In my family, however, they were more like a rite of passage. All of my siblings had chipped front teeth and I had them too. Not only would we get chipped baby teeth, we would also chip our permanent ones. None of us set out to do it, and we didn't exactly beat up on each other.
We just played a little bit more roughly than most kids. We always love to wrestle and horse around, and our parents gave us leave to pretty much do what we wanted. As a result, there were always accidents happening. Things always went a little bit too far and someone got hurt. Although the hard feelings would not last, the injuries occasionally would. As a result, dentist visits for chipped teeth were not infrequent in my childhood.
As a matter of fact, after the first few times it happens, the only thing I really disliked about chipped teeth with having to go to the dentist. Like all kids, I hated the dentist. I wasn't very squeamish about pain " as I said, I was always playing roughly with my older siblings. It was just the anticipation and the buildup that I didn't like.
I resented being put in that chair with my mouth pried open and the dentist allowed to do whatever he wanted. I knew intellectually that he was doing it for my own good, but nevertheless I would have rather had a chipped tooth than have to put up with him fixing it.
The worst were the chipped front teeth. Those were the ones that really freaked my mom out, and made the dentist ask all sorts of uncomfortable questions. At the time I didn't understand what was going on, but in retrospect I am pretty sure that he believed that we were being abused. My parents simple explanation that we had been horsing around never seemed to satisfy them. I guess I enjoyed the way I was raised, but when I have kids of my own, I'm going to make sure that they don't have chipped teeth. After all, a little bit of caution is worth it if you get to save a trip to the dentist! If they are a stubborn as I was, however, I don't expect me rules will work. They certainly didn't work for me and my brothers and sisters.
