Try Not to Smile in St. George
In between Salt Lake City, Utah and Las Vegas, Nevada is a booming city located right on the Utah side of the Arizona state line. St. George, Utah has one of the warmest climates in the state, making it more than bearable to live there during the summers and winters alike. Its amazing scenery along with the numerous amounts of activities creates heavenly culture all year long.
The city was first settled in 1861 under the direction of Brigham Young, a leader for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. St. George was founded as a place where the members of the Church could grow and sell cotton, but was soon shut down since they never could produce cotton at competitive market rates.
This settlement was named after an apostle of the Church, George A. Smith. Throughout the years, St. George has grown to become the eighth largest city in Utah but is now the fastest growing city in the state.
It is the second fastest-growing metropolitan area in the United States behind Greeley, Colorado. It also helps that the city is located directly on Interstate I-15, which connects Salt Lake City to Las Vegas and down into southern California.
St. George is well known for its beautiful geology. In the northern part of the city, the famous red bluffs bring unique color to the atmosphere.
Two peaks are in the center of the city and are covered in lava rock. One can see the edges of the Mojave Desert if they look south and celebrated Zion National Park if they look to the east. To the north are the large Pine Valley Mountains which loom over the city.
Along with the increasing population of the city, St. George's economy has also exploded. The corporate headquarters for SkyWest Airlines is located in the city and there is a large Wal-mart distribution center nearby.
A 420,000-square-foot hospital was built in 2003 which holds 196 beds. Much of the growing economy for southwestern Utah is from tourism, since St. George is close to Zion National Park and Bryce Canyon National Park, as well as several state parks and other recreational areas.
The Utah Shakespearean Festival is put on during the summer and fall each year and is not located very far away. St. George also has one of the highest number of golf courses per capita in the country and can be played on almost all year long.
There are lots of special events and sports in the city like the St. George Marathon, which is the 13th largest marathon in the country. Many athletes have come out of the Division II Dixie State College and have gone on to the National Football League, National Basketball Association, and Major League Baseball.
There are three 4A high schools and one 3A high school in the area and are competitive. St. George was once home to the Minor League Baseball team called the Zion Pioneerzz which was later called the St. George Pioneerzz. The city is currently home to the St. George Roadrunners, another Minor League Baseball team.
Since St. George is located so close to Salt Lake City and Las Vegas, the city gets hit with the two main newspapers and television channels from each city. The Salt Lake Tribune, Deseret Morning News, Las Vegas Review-Journal, and the Las Vegas Sun flood the city along with its own local newspaper, called The Spectrum.
As far as television goes, there is only one local St. George channel. In general, the network programming airs two hours later than the same programming broadcast on Utah's translator called KSL. There are all kinds of music genres on the radio in St. George.
The city of St. George has quickly become one of the nicest places to go during the year. Many people have made it their retirement spot and have moved in so they can play in the sun for the rest of their lives.
They know of all the great things St. George and the surrounding areas have to offer them. They see the colorful array of nature all around and bask in the entertainment provided all year long. They can get an amazing house for really cheap because the price of housing is very low there right now.
The city of St. George is an extremely nice city with lots to offer its residents and tourists. There is so much to see and do in this wonderful city.
