How to Promote Your Website for Free

It's probably safe to say that effective marketing is one of the most important facets of any successful business, regardless of size. Whilst having a business strategy in place and a strong, customer-centric ethos is certainly essential, if nobody knows the company is there then all the hard work performed elsewhere in the organisation will count for nothing.

Traditionally speaking, however, direct marketing has never been an inexpensive route to go down. From the market research, to the results analysis and onto the subsequent campaign implementation, it has often taken a substantial proportion of a company's annual budget to simply get their name and brand values out into the public domain.

Of course, with the advent of the Internet era, this is no longer the case. Most businesses these days will have an online presence, which will - at the very least - include a dedicated website and perhaps a few links from other relevant industry websites.

At a time when many organisations may be worrying about how the current financial climate will affect them in the immediate future, there may be some apprehensions about spending money on 'non-essential' costs, such as marketing. However, this is the first mistake any business can make. As many consumers are starting to watch their spending, it's important to be proactive about targeting new customers; and importantly, this can be done without costing a single penny.

Although the costs and efforts involved in setting up a well designed, informative website are negligible on the grand scheme of things, getting people to actually visit the website is another matter altogether. With countless competitors fiercely battling for the same customer base, there is an art to standing out from the crowd.

Whilst well written website copy will certainly help to optimise the ranking on search engines, it's still a good idea to be a little more direct and proactive in terms of making the website known to a wider audience. By establishing a presence on relevant industry websites, forums and other forms of online trading spaces, this can be an excellent way of generating valuable free business advertising - the key is to be intelligent about it.

There's little point in simply posting a link on a forum somewhere and expect people to arrive in their droves. It's important to explore ways of building a credible presence in numerous locations on the World Wide Web, which may involve developing relationships with external website owners and offering genuine content in exchange for a link back, for example.

Alternatively, it may also be an idea to look at ways of tapping into existing online marketplaces; this is a good way of augmenting the company's existing website and can be a good way of driving a significant amount of traffic towards it.

So, this helps to show how, by being a little creative, it is possible for businesses of all sizes to promote their website for free. Considering many companies are trying to curb their unnecessary spending, this can only be good news.
