What Guitar is Best to Buy For Kids and Adults - My 3 Tips
I get asked "Which guitar is the best to buy" all the time. Here are 3 basic tips that should help you out.
1. Decide on Your Style
Decide what kind of music you want to play. Rock, acoustic, classical, jazz etc. If you want to play rock or jazz you can start with an inexpensive electric guitar like a Fender Squire Stratocaster or Epiphone Gibson Les Paul copy. If you want to play classical then you should really start with a nylon string folk guitar. If you like the acoustic sound then be very careful because you need to get one with excellent "action". Action means the strings are close to the frets and this will make it easier for you to learn.
If you are buying for a child then I recommend First Act acoustic guitars which is what I bought for my kids. You do not want to spend allot of money until your child proves they will stick with it. This brand of acoustic guitars is the only one I have ever played in the low end price range that does not play like a toy. Almost every other guitar out there in the $50 and under tier will add to the difficulty and frustration of learning.
2. Try Some Guitars Out
Go to a local store with a friend that plays guitar and ask them to show you around. If at all possible do not go in by yourself and deal with a salesman. Have your friend play a few different guitars for you so you can get an idea of the various sounds. Check out the acoustic steel string, classical and folk nylon strings and definitely have your friend plug in an electric guitar to show you the differences.
Next you are going to want to try each one using a very simple method. Just press the 1st string down with your first finger about a 1/4 inch behind the first fret and pluck the string. If you don't understand that, just ask your friend to explain. You will see than it is harder to do on some guitars than others. This process will show you what I mean about how important it is to pick a guitar with great "action" and that is easy to play.
3. Always Make the Final Purchase Used or Online
Many people make the mistake of buying a cheap new guitar from a store. Most of these guitars are difficult for even experienced guitarists to play because they go out of tune, don't play well and sound terrible. Don't let a salesman pressure you into buying an overpriced guitar on the spot in a music store that will make your learning process less enjoyable.
Therefore I recommend buying the best used guitar you can from the eBay.com guitar section. If you must buy something new then use Google shopping search or other comparative searches on the Internet to get the very best you can afford.
