How to Choose the Boxing Bag That is Right For You

If you're serious about taking your training to the next level, investing in a boxing bag for your home is a great option. Sure you can always head to the nearest gym, but the convenience of having one at home is definitely worth the investment.

The question becomes, what type is right for you? Well this depends on the type of training you want to do. There are various types of bags including the heavy bag, speed bag, and double end bag to name some of the more common. Understanding the uses of each is crucial in making the best possible choice for your training requirements.

The heavy bag is ideal for working on your punching power. It is just as it says, a large heavy bag, usually made of vinyl or leather, that you hang from either a bag stand or a hanger. Heavy bags generally come in two types, leather and vinyl.

Vinyl tend to be less expensive, but they also aren't as durable as their leather counterparts. The leather heavy bag is the top end version. The leather will hold up to a great deal of abuse and after all, abuse is what a heavy bag is made for.

Heavy bags can come in many different sizes from 25 lbs up to 150 lbs and can come pre-filled with sand or fiber or filled upon getting to your home.

The speed bag is designed to improve your speed and reflexes. Speed bags are hung from speed bag platforms that are generally mounted to a wall or hung on a stand. It takes a good bit of practice and patience to get the speed and rhythm down to properly use a speed bag, but once you do, there is no better substitute for honing the reflexes you'll need during a match.

The double end bag can come in both heavy bag size and closer to speed bag size. The double end bag is attached at both the top and the bottom by strands. This allows the bag to move around quickly in various directions as you train. The movements force you to improve your aim and agility to use it properly.

The above three types of boxing bags are the most common and there are still variations upon each that you will find. The important thing is simply to understand the benefits and requirements of each so that you can make an intelligent choice when deciding upon which type of boxing bag is right for you.
