Importance of Confidence in Tennis
The first step towards building confidence (or more of it if some is already present in the individual) is to clearly know what confidence is. Confidence is not something that only certain people can gain. Anybody can build confidence, as it is completely in the head. It is your mind set on your ability to win that much against the higher ranked player, or too run to the other side of the court to hit the tennis ball. There are generally 4 reasons that tennis players do not have confidence.
First and foremost, the player has likely not had any major achievements. Confidence is built on results. If you win, you are likely going to be much more confident than someone who loses repeatedly.
Secondly, the player does not practice, does not put much effort in, and is not completely aware of the game of tennis. If these characteristics are evident, the player is not going to be confident in their game at all. On the other hand, one who practices a lot, tries hard, and knows the game of tennis inside out, is usually going to be much more confident of them self.
Next, many players have only one goal in their mind - to win. This is not good because if they lose, they automatically lose confidence. The goals a tennis player sets need to be realistic, as you are probably not going to win every game. Set goals that are achievable, and when you accomplish them, you will notice a boost in your confidence.
Lastly, players are often not confident in their skill of the game because of a lack of self esteem. Even though this is not completely tennis related it is still important. A tennis players outside life (social life especially) will have a big impact on their game. Self esteem usually comes from a social life, and with no social life will be a lack of self esteem. Though, with self esteem, the player will put out a lot more on the court, and feel better of them self even when losing. This will always push them to play harder and "go for the gold".
Confidence is one of the most important aspects of tennis. Of course, skill is very important, but it is a combination of skill and confidence that will create the ultimate tennis player. Skill alone is not going to do much for a tennis player.
