Options for Spider Vein Removal: What Patients Should Know
Lasers are commonly used for most cosmetic dermatology procedures to eliminate wrinkles, fine lines and improve the elasticity of sagging skin. Lasers are even used to remove the permanent ink from tattoos that lies deep within the layers of the skin.
The advantage of laser technology is its ability to penetrate the skin without requiring an incision. There are still some treatments, however, that require invasive procedures. Facelifts, for example, are still the most effective ways to eliminate a large amount of wrinkles in one instance. As with any cosmetic procedure, there are several ways to go about correcting the problem, both surgical and non-surgical.
Spider vein removal is one of these cosmetic procedures that have several options, both surgical and non-surgical. Spider veins, or varicose veins, can be a problem for many reasons. In terms of appearance, spider veins can be very unsightly on both men and women. They tend to appear after about the age of 30 and manifest as blueish or purplish twisted lines underneath the skin. Their dark coloring is caused by the build up of blood from poor circulation. This can be aggravated by pregnancy, age, habitually standing for extended periods of time or other such causes that will prevent the even flow of blood. They most often appear in the legs, and can become so clogged that they actually are elevated above the surface of the skin. These elevations appear like coiled and twisted rope underneath the skin.
Most people opt for spider vein removal for reasons that are cosmetic. The appearance of spider veins often indicates age, and can increase with obesity and poor health. There are health concerns that could also motivate one to remove their varicose veins. These include aching or pain in the legs or itching that is alleviated with the removal of the vein.
If the veins are small enough, laser vein removal may be sufficient to eliminate the veins entirely. The laser works by penetrating the layers of the skin and collapses the vein while your body absorbs the remainder of the demolished vein. The procedure is minimally painful, and is ideal for spider veins are small or medium sized. Recovery is instant, and patients generally only experience some mild pain or numbness.
For veins that are a lot larger, patients may have to consider surgery for spider vein removal. Injections called sclerotherapy are available that insert a liquid into the veins, and causes them to collapse. Surgery involves a technique that ties off the vein and removes it from the body entirely. These procedures are both for major veins that lie deep within the skin and cannot be fixed with laser technology.
