Hope for Varicose Vein Removal
It used to be that after a certain age, there were several irreversible realities that descended upon an otherwise youthful and energetic body. These unavoidable effects of age include wrinkles, sagging skin, sun spots and, perhaps most misshapen, varicose veins. Varicose veins are common among men and women in middle age, though they can appear as a result of other health factors, such as pregnancy, hormonal changes, obesity, or habitually standing for too long.
Luckily there are now several options for the treatment and removal of these veins. If you are looking to showcase your legs in a bikini this summer, or if the veins you have are causing health problems such as pain or itching, there are several procedures to research and consider that can permanently eliminate your problematic varicose veins.
Vein removal has perhaps been made most popular due to the advances in laser technology. The laser has transformed the field of cosmetic surgery, and is applications are being used in a wide range of procedures, from anti-aging to tattoo removal.
The advantage of the laser in vein removal is its ability to penetrate the skin using non-invasive means. The light energy of the laser is calibrated to harm only the vein. The laser technician or doctor is able to pulse the light along the sight-lines of the vein, causing it to collapse. The vein is then re-absorbed by the body.
Other options include vein sclerotherapy. This method is optimal for veins that are harder to reach by the laser and lie deeper within the skin. Generally these veins are larger as well, and pose health problems such as pain and aching in the legs. Sclerotherapy treatments shrink the vein being treated by injecting it with a liquid. Eventually the vein collapses, and similar to laser treatment, it will be absorbed by the body. Sclerotherapy generally costs about the same as laser treatment, and should be used for thicker veins.
Patients can also consider surgery for vein removal. This would literally involve removing the vein from the body intact. The surgeon will make two incisions in the leg at each end of the vein. One end is tied off, and the vein is the pulled out of the leg through the other incision. This process is done under local anesthetic, however most patients are able to walk immediately after the surgery. There is no extended period of recovery time for the surgery.
