Reception Desks - Form Versus Function
A reception desk is more than just a workstation for the office manager to sit at. Often the reception desk is the face of a company. It is the first thing a customer or client sees when they walk into your business. A poorly built or cheap desk presents a very negative image to the customers. A cluttered and disorganized desk will make your company look cluttered and disorganized.
There is an old saying that first impressions are everything. Well that saying is true and it applies to how your business presents itself as well.
When choosing a reception desk you must consider how it will fit into your office or business setting. Will it enhance or hurt the look of the office? Does it match the color scheme? Does it look too old, too trendy, too modern? Consider the desk completely from a design perspective and ask yourself: "Does this desk fit in with my office?"
It is important that the desk matches the office design, but it is also important that the desk does not impede movement around the office. Make sure the reception desk can fit into a location that is easily accessible to customers, but at the same time not in the way of the customers. You want the location of the desk to enhance the flow of the office, not hinder it. This includes the ability to work around the desk. You do not want it to be such a cramped fit that the person working the front desk feels like they are trapped behind it.
Once you have an idea of the type of desk that will be a good fit for your office it is time to consider its utility. Getting a desk that is aesthetically pleasing is important, but do not throw all the functionality out the window. A minimalist desk can be great for a modern style office, but if there are no substantial drawers included in that minimalist design it is going to hurt your business much more than it helps.
Make sure that the reception desk allows for easy organization. There should be ample table space, plenty of room for 1 or 2 computers depending on the size of your office. Room for multiple phones is always good and the drawers should allow for an easy filing system. Obviously the exact requirements will change based upon your business, but these are generally features that most offices need.
When looking for a new reception desk the most important tip I can give you is this: The best desk is one that maximizes the balance of form versus function. If the scale gets tipped to far in either direction you are not going to be happy.
