Lecterns - Standing the Test of Time
Lecterns are one of those interesting inventions that have somehow managed to survive for centuries virtually unchanged. If you were to go back several hundred years you would be able to find lecterns that are almost identical to the ones being used today. I would bet that if you could go a couple hundred years into the future you would find that lecterns are still widely used.
There are a couple of reasons for this. The image of seeing someone stand in front of a lectern and give a profound speech is well embedded into many of our minds. Seeing a person stand behind that podium seems to give a sense of weight and importance to what is being said. For religious purposes the lectern is traditionally where religious texts like the Christian Bible rest. The priest or pastor then stands behind the lectern and gives the sermon. One of the most important aspects of religion is tradition. Lecterns have become a part and parcel to most religious sermons, for that reason alone they will most likely stay in use for some time to come.
The other reason lecterns have been able to stand the test of time has nothing to do with traditions, perceptions, or showmanship. Quite frankly lecterns are just a really useful tool for public speaking. They serve as an obvious focal point to catch the audience's eyes. They are en exceptionally useful tool for not only holding books, but other documents and items the speaker may need as well, for instance a bottle of water. They can also be useful for nervous speakers by providing a place for them to hide behind.
For business meetings, conventions and school settings lecterns can be turned into technological wonders. Many of the most modern lecterns have an exceptional amount of gadgets built into them. For example many of them have microphones included. It is common for some lecterns to provide complete audio and video control to the person giving the speech. This is nice because it can give the speaker more control over the flow of the presentation. Some of the most advanced lecterns even have screens built into them which can allow the presenter to see exactly what the audience is seeing and make adjustments as necessary.
Lecterns come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes. You can find lecterns that will perfectly match the decorations and fit the requirements of virtually any event.
