In business, performance is of the utmost importance. Employee's performance determines the company's performance and the company's performance determines the stock's performance. Thus, improving performance at even the lowest level will increase sales and profits. Once of the best tools that companies can use to improve performance is communication.

In business, performance is of the utmost importance. Employee's performance determines the company's performance and the company's performance determines the stock's performance. Thus, improving performance at even the lowest level will increase sales and profits. Once of the best tools that companies can use to improve performance is communication.

Without communication between upper management and the lower employees, businesses can suffer from increased employee turnover, dissatisfied customers, lack of customer loyalty, and stifled creativity. If employees feel that communication from upper management is genuine, then the employees will be glad to go that 'extra mile' to achieve the company's goals.

Employees require three types of communication from those who are in supervisory positions over them. The first type is company knowledge. This information should be conveyed during a process known as on-boarding (welcoming a new employee to the company). Company knowledge should include the history of the company, the current policies and procedures, company beliefs and values, and specific details of the products which the company offers. This information fosters a sense of belonging in new employees. It brings the employee up to the same level as everyone else.

Next, the employee needs to know what the company expects from them. This information should be conveyed at several times during employment ' at hire, before any promotions, and during the review process. Expectations should include information that allows employees to not only learn their position, but to perform well in that position.

The final communication required by employees is that which makes them human. Human beings are social animals. We require friendly conversation and appreciate others taking an interest in them. Some of this communication is prohibited by harassment laws. However, friendly conversation is permitted. This type of communication, especially from a person higher on the food chain than the employee, will create an atmosphere of worth, value and respect. Employees are more likely to perform well in this type of atmosphere.

Unfortunately, most companies focus on one or another of the communication requirements while ignoring the others. Some companies provide the first two to a varying degree, but leave the third completely out. However, neither of these policies develops a well-rounded employee. Without the third form of communication, no matter how engrossed in the company or how well trained an employee becomes, if they do not feel appreciated, they will not perform well.
