How to Improve Your Squidoo Lens Rating

By Kaushal Sheth
Apr 1, 2009
Many lenmasters (as the creators of content on Squidoo are known) are frustrated when they see that their lenses are not getting high star ratings - in spite of having excellent content on the lenses.

Of course the desire to have a high star rating on Squidoo is not just about vain ambition and desire to be recognized. As it turns out, your star rating is one, and perhaps the biggest factor that the Squidoo algorithm takes into consideration when ranking websites and having a higher star rating means that your website gets ranked higher on various searches.

It is worth noting, however, that unlike what many people think, Squidoo's star ratings don't count beyond the network and therefore don't affect how high or low your website gets ranked externally by the search engines. Therefore a low star rating should not be cause for too much concern as long as you have good content on the lens, and as long as it is well optimized.

You need to take note of the fact that the only people who can rate your lens are your fellow lenmasters. People reading the lens without logging into Squidoo can not give your lens a star rating even they feel that it is particularly good. This means that if most of the visitors to your lens are finding it with aid of a search engine, then they have no opportunity to rate it, as most are likely not to be Squidoo lenmasters.

As for the lenmasters logged into Squidoo, they might not always have the inclination to give your lens a star rating even when they find it appealing. Clearly, if you are to get a high rating and for many people high means nothing less than a five star rating you will have to go out of your way to get rated.

A good place to start the efforts towards getting a high star rating for your lens would be to be highly visible in the Squidoo lenmasters forums. Once in these forums you have at least a couple of ways to get people to rate your lenses. You can, for one, be pragmatic about it and just request people to rate your lenses, rather than beating around the bush.

Asking people to rate your lenses is asking for criticism and when doing it, you should be ready for negative criticism as well meaning that you might as well get some biting ratings. You can also get people to rate your Squidoo lenses through active participation in the lensmaster's forum.

If you become a nice participant at these forums, then people this time the people being lenmasters - might feel the urge to click on your name on the forum to see what kinds of lenses you have and once there they might get the inclination to give a star rating for your lenses, though it is worth noting that the rating they give might not always be rating you so much desire.
