How To Pitch A Baseball Perfectly
When pitching a baseball, it is important to remember a few steps to make each pitch a success. Here is a guide to pitching a baseball properly for right-handed pitchers. If you are left-handed, follow the instructions but mirror the action.
The first thing to do is to set up. You can either use the wind-up position or the stretch position.
The wind-up position is the basic setup for pitching. In this position, you will place your feet apart, at shoulder width. Stand straight in front of the mound where your toes should be hanging off the front. Face your catcher directly while your toes are directly pointed towards him. Put your glove in front of your chest as your elbows rest on both sides of your torso.
The stretch position is a faster and a more balanced pitch. Simply place your right foot down against the rubber. Your other foot must be in front by 1-2 inches. You can rotate your hips fully in this position, which makes you throw harder.
Grip the ball based on the type of pitch you want to throw. When doing this, make sure that the ball is inside the glove. Do not start throwing if you don't have a comfortable grip.
Take a small step to the left with your left foot. Transfer your mass to your left foot, then raise your right foot and put it next to the rubber. The right side of your right foot should then press against the mound.
Now raise your left leg until it becomes parallel to the floor or even higher. Your body should face the third plate rather than the home plate.
You now have to do two things at the same time:
1) Move your arms and imitate a descending crescent movement. Your front elbow has to be at a relaxed angle while your front arm stays closed. Your throwing hand now has to face the second plate palm-sided. The body must still face the third plate.
2) Start lowering your leg to get it close to the ground, but do not touch the ground. To do this, turn your right knee so that your left leg will get closer to the ground. Stride only when you have lowered your left leg fully.
Place your front foot down. Make sure that your foot is pointing at a 75 degree angle. This will then get you to the power position. In this position, your legs should be fully extended while your hips and arms remain closed.
Shove yourself off with your rear foot and drag yourself onward using your front foot. Turn yourself from the 75 degree angle to a 90 degree angle. Do this before swinging your upper body open and heaving your left arm in the direction of the first base.
Lengthen your pitching arm as far as possible. Allow the ball to soar off your wrist. Make sure that you do not snap your wrist as this could injure you.
Follow through. As you extend your arm, have your rear leg rise up from the frontward thrust.
